Accessorize your Patio

Re-decorating your patio is just as fun and important as any other room in your home, especially at this time of year. Whether you are the type to shop for individual pieces and paint colours, redo one room at a time, or repeat a common theme throughout the home, always keep your outdoor space in mind as part of the plan. Adding accessories to your patio will liven it up and make it more comfortable for family and friends. Similar to any room you choose to decorate, there are many different “looks” you can achieve. Readily available products lend to bright, earthy, or modern black and white themes.

Outdoor matting is available in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes. ‘Mad Mats’ are a durable, eco-friendly and reasonably priced option. They are designed to look like living room carpet, but are made of 98% recycled polypropylene plastic. They can be left out doors all year long, and if they get dirty simply hose them off.

Complement your matting of choice with outdoor cushions and pillows that can be found in most home and garden stores and online. Adding comfort to your wood, wicker, wrought-iron or plastic seating is key to creating a livable space. These cushions are covered in all-weather fabric to resist the sun and water, and clean easily.

A properly lit patio allows for extended use and night-time entertaining.  Decorative lights are easy to install and great for creating atmosphere. For example, bring out solar paper lanterns and torches when entertaining, and mini-lights and candles for more of an intimate feel. Shown here are battery operated umbrella lights that sell for approximately $60.

Add some greenery to your patio with portable planters. In recent years, extra large planters made of stone, aluminum and wicker have proved popular.

This simply decorated patio featured on HGTV features many of the discussed accessories: colourful cushions add style and comfort to a wrought iron patio set, an extra large planter matches the white brick of the home, and mini-lights create an intimate atmostphere.

Perhaps apple could donate us one for testing ;-) We’ll check it out, but since we’re using WordPress, anything we do will have to be custom just for the ipad unless they come up with an update.

This space looks so bright and inviting. The accessories are the perfect touch without overpowering the esthetics that nature brings.

Apparently, there’s no magic bullet. Having a mix of useful content and a network of sites willing to link to your articles helps tremendously.
