All about renovations and photosharing

There’s plenty of proof that we all love to rubber-neck a renovation; from the abundance of TV renovation programs to the inevitability that you’ll go out of  your way to “walk past that reno going on a few streets over” we just love to watch other people fixing up their homes. Thankfully, the Internet provides a million opportunities to vent your inner peeping-tom and show off your own projects.

cool modern kitchen design

There's a fine line between institutional and minimalist; this one integrates warm hardwood floors to soften the strong lines.

Their perspiration is your inspiration
You know what you like when you see it, finding photos of it is the tricky part. When doing an image search on search engines such as google or bing, try using phrases you’d find yourself using when walking into a space that inspires you. For example searching for just “kitchen cabinets” will get you pretty much pages and pages of the same old-fashioned suburban oak cabinets (no surprise, those first few images are typically cabinet companies) but try searching ”cool kitchens” and you’ll really get some interesting results.

Sharing is caring
A great alternative to the search engines are photo sharing sites (click here for our list of the most popular free photo sharing sites).  They are great places where people often post photos during their construction project and where you can find some great inspirations and historial references. bidmyreno.com has created a few image galleries on flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/bidmyreno/galleries/ as an example. You can also your ongoing renovation to your facebook account (unfortunately, facebook limits the size of your photos).

On flickr, you can:

Search for keyword images: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=renovation#page=0
Groups http://www.flickr.com/search/groups/?q=renovation that link individuals together over a common interest (http://www.flickr.com/groups/before_after_shots/)
Or individuals’ pages (http://www.flickr.com/photos/43102365@N04/)

Laugh at other’s misfortune
You’ll see some funny stuff out there on those photo sharing sites, including some intentional, some not. http://www.flickr.com/photos/renovationdisasters/ is replete with photos that would turn the stomach of the most seasoned contractor, while http://thereifixedit.com/ and http://lovelylisting.com/ are purely for poking fun.
