Mold cannot be wiped away like dirt, nor painted over as if it were a stain. These budget tactics may “hide” mold from new home buyers or renters, but it will return in no time and is a health concern for the residents (people with allergies and asthma are more sensitive to mold, however a rare form of toxic mold can cause fatigue, nausea and headaches in just about anyone). In order to eliminate the problem permanently, it is best to hire professional cleaners or Mold Contractors depending on the severity and location of the mold.
For mold that develops on surfaces from dampness or standing water, especially if it covers more than 10 square feet, consider hiring a professional cleaner. The cleaning process involves washing the area with a mild detergent solution and allowing it to dry, followed by wiping down the surface with bleach and water repeatedly. A borate based solution is then applied to prevent mold from growing back. To reduce spread, the cleaner will ensure that any tainted materials are discarded properly.
More severe problems require the help of a “Mold Contractor”, or the combination of home repair and cleaning service that they offer. Wall coverings, ceiling tiles, flooring etc. that is found to have mold growing underneath will have to be completely removed and replaced. Mold can also develop on the exterior surfaces of the home. Again, painting and cleaning may not sufficiently eliminate the problem, but rather a home repair is required. If your request for renovation to remove mold is not answered on bidmyreno, check out the “Fire and Water Damage Restoration” section of the Yellow Pages.
If you catch the problem early and manage to eliminate a few specs with bleach, congratulations!, but keep in mind that whatever is causing indoor dampness or standing water needs to be fixed so that the problem does not arise again. As a homeowner, the best thing you can do is prevent a mold problem from occurring in the first place.
- Look for mold in rooms with both high water usage and humidity: kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements
- Wipe away condensation and water droplets from window sills
- Open windows and doors to increase air flow in your home
- Place furniture a few inches away from the inside of exterior walls to increase air circulation
Preventative measures that may require the help of a contractor include:
- Installing exhaust fans in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms
- Replacing ventilation systems and insulation in attics and crawl spaces
- Removing and replacing water-damaged carpet and hardwood
Note: just saw in the comments that there’s a blog devoted to the subject of eradicating black mold: How to Kill Black Mold, you may have to wade through a few non-topic posts, but there are some good links and info there.
Interesting.
